• My Style

My style of painting has varied through the years and I've experimented in new directions. One of my current interests is to explore color, line, shape, and pattern, letting these elements be the focus of my composition and expression.

  • Sometimes I want to depict the subject in a recognizable way, such as in my painting of the train depot in Old Town Conyers. In that work, I wanted to capture the old historic building as it is now, gently faded by the passing of time.

  • Sometimes I want to release the subject from its realistic existence, using it only as the starting place for my composition, which then takes on a life of its own. I like subjects that are visually stimulating and complex. One of my favorite painting sites was an asbandoned factory that Professor Vessely had sent us to in Athens. Gadgets and gizmos hung from the ceiling, tangled in the criss-crossed beams, and piles of broken zig-zag machinery lay jumbled on the spattered floor. From an unusual place like this one and from cityscapes, landscapes, waterscapes, meadows of spotted cows and interiors, I find the qualities I seek; even stacks of junk in the attic have the potential to spark my expression and ideas. I use water soluble crayons, pens and pencils that dissolve and blend into my paint to add line, accent, and detail. From what I see, I rearrange, edit, embellish, emphasize, and "patternize", filtering everything through the lens of my perspective to produce a new image.
